What Is the SAT and Who Needs It?

The SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) is a standardised test used by colleges and universities as part of the admissions process. While it originated in the United States, it is now accepted by institutions across North America, Europe, and beyond. It measures readiness for university-level work in Reading, Writing, and Math.

Who should take the SAT?

Any student applying to universities in the US, and increasingly those targeting English-taught programmes in Europe. Institutions like Bocconi in Milan and Luiss in Rome accept SAT scores as part of their admissions process.

When should I take it?

In your final secondary school year or early gap year, at least four to six months before your application deadline to leave room for a retake.

What is a good SAT score?

The SAT is scored 400 to 1600. Most competitive universities look for 1200 and above. Top US schools expect 1450 and above. European universities typically look for 1100 to 1300 depending on the programme. Your target depends on your specific shortlist.

How many times can I take it?

As many times as you want. Most universities consider your highest score. Two to three attempts is common and widely accepted.
